College Ministry Love

Each week during the “Love Jesus” series, we’ll be sharing testimonies and showing examples of people committed to resurrection love. Through their actions, they’re showing a Christlike lifestyle in our community. One such model is in our college ministry.

Sunday evening marks the end of the spring season for college ministry. What a remarkable year we have had. If Fall wasn’t powerful enough with the events at Strozier library, under Zach Allen’s leadership, our ministry has grown in depth and breadth, expanding its reach from Tallahassee to Boston, touching the Greek community at FSU, reaching students in the school of music, and impacting the FAMU campus. Praise the Lord.

On Monday evening, Zach shared with the deacons some of the outcomes from the Boston trip. Three of our college students on the trip made professions of faith, and the church in Boston where our church worked held their first Easter Sunday baptism. This year Zach has built a strong relationship with Beta Theta Pi fraternity and the FSU ministry to Greek students called Doulos. In addition to the work through the FSU BCM, Go Week, the Southern Scholarship Foundation, Seminole Sensation, and much more Zach continues to evangelize, equip, and disciple in tremendous ways. We are blessed by his ministry.

Zach is joined in this effort by a dedicated staff of interns, volunteers and ministers. We are blessed by a church body that understands no one minister can do everything on a university campus. Working with Zach and his team, Penny Folsom and Anna Marie Friars began a life group for music students (and their friends). Todd Smith involves our students as youth ministry interns, and Rhonda Smith does the same with students in children’s ministry. Marty and Janice Smith reach many of our international graduate students and their families. We are blessed each Sunday by the talents and ministries of these students as they lead in both worship services. Many of our families adopt these students, taking them to lunch, doing laundry, and serving as homes away from home.

Sunday morning, Zach will baptize college students, and our church will commission those who will be sent out this summer to serve across the country. Sunday evening, our music students and friends will lead Crescendo, an evening of worship at 7:00 p.m. benefiting our music ministry’s work with college students.

I’m proud of our church and the efforts that are going on in college ministry. How can you help in the days to come?

  1. Pray boldly for the students on mission this summer
You’ll receive an insert in your worship guide this Sunday. Please pray for these students, and communicate with them throughout the summer.
  2. Attend Crescendo
Come Sunday night, and support these students. Let them know personally how grateful you are that they give of their time throughout the year.
  3. Sign up for Go Week
We’ll need volunteers again in August to assist Zach with our responsibilities during orientation week. Pray for doors to remain open for us to serve on campus.
  4. Stay alert this summer
College ministry doesn’t end when the semester is over. We’ll continue to have college gatherings, small groups, and another trip to Boston. Students and families will be attending orientation, and many will be checking us out in worship while they’re here for the weekend. Pray for the plans that are already taking shape for a great fall.
