Operation Safe Neighborhood

Last Tuesday, I attended a meeting in Mayor Andrew Gillum’s office regarding “Operation Safe Neighborhood.” As you know, Leon County has the highest crime rate in our state. A recent shooting in Frenchtown the last weekend of May served as another example of the problem. Not all of these incidents result in death, but most of these are related to gun violence in certain areas of town. I listened as pastors from these neighborhoods shared together about their concerns. Our city and TPD are stepping up their efforts. Now it’s our turn.

In partnership with Tallahassee Police Department (TPD), the Sheriff’s department, area churches, and the City of Tallahassee, our community is coming together on Saturday nights in the summer. TPD will identify key areas of town that need citizens to distribute fliers about CrimeStoppers, demonstrate our support for these neighborhoods, and create a climate of safety. They have asked area churches to take one Saturday night to assist them by walking the neighborhoods that are most affected.

Jeremiah 29:7 urges us to “seek the peace of the city to which I have called you into exile, for if it prospers you to will prosper.” This kind of peace—or shalom—is only possible when people who believe the gospel share the gospel through word and deed. When the chief of police and mayor ask for your help in these important matters, it’s incumbent upon those of us who love Tallahassee to respond with our presence. First Baptist will participate in this effort on Saturday evening, July 11. We’ll meet in our parking lot at 6:45PM for prayer and then travel to the area selected by the city. TPD will provide a mobile command unit and support for us while we’re assisting them. We will be finished by 10:00PM. Wear your First Baptist t-shirts, and let’s share God’s love together. If you plan to attend, please email Amy Parks to RSVP.

Even if you can’t make it that evening, please pray for those of us who will be a part of the effort. Many other churches will be taking the other Saturday evenings. Let’s pray for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.
