Climbing Everest

We climbed Mount Everest today at First Baptist Church. Vacation Bible School is off to a great start. With the assistance of 200 adult and youth volunteers, 266 children learned how to conquer challenges with God’s mighty power.

Today we learned Elijah’s story from 1 Kings 17 and memorized 2 Corinthians 9:8, “And God will generously provide all you need.” Just as God provided food for Elijah during a drought, God has the power to provide for us. The children made banks to take home for their Bible School offering. This year’s offering will pay for Bibles to go to the earthquake-ravaged region of Nepal. This afternoon, 123 kids participated in Upward basketball and cheerleading camp.

Tomorrow, we will learn that God has the power to comfort. God spoke to Elijah in 1 Kings 19, and we’ll learn 2 Corinthians 1:4, “He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.”

On Wednesday, we’ll study the story of Naaman in 2 Kings 5 and learn that God has the power to heal. Our memory verse is, “He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds” (Psalm 147:3).

Thursday’s story is about Jesus. God has the power to forgive, and he shows that forgiveness when Jesus dies on the cross and comes back to life. We’ll study Peter’s denial from Luke 22:31-24:12 and learn a verse from Nehemiah 9:7, “You are a God of forgiveness.”

We wrap up our week Friday focused on God’s love. We’ll learn that God has the power to love us forever. Our Bible story comes from John 14:1-3, and we’ll memorize John 3:15, “Everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.”

Continue to pray for us this week, and join us Friday evening for VBS and Upward Family Night:

  • The Upward Sports demonstration begins at 4:00PM in the CLC.
  • Supper is served at 4:45 in Fellowship Hall ($10/family).
  • Closing VBS ceremonies are at 6:00 in the sanctuary, followed by snow cones in the parking lot.

Let’s climb the mountain for God’s glory!
